 ref. 1

about

And there it is.... recorded in August 2023 and released in spring 2024: My 3rd solo album for (soprano) ukulele "Ukumentals no. 3".
All original ukulele pieces that I came up with over the last year in my daily life, vacations or on trips with or without my family.

Most tracks can be seen as post cards or memories of enjoyable times, places and people. I love to be around the sea, on the sea or at the coast like the north sea, baltic sea or the atlantic ocean (Portugal) at least once a year.

The recording process was the same as the other two albums "ukumentals no. 1" and "no. 2". I booked two days at my friend's studio wagon in my heritage Schöneiche bei Berlin (Christof Rose).
Setting up the studio the first evening, staying a night in the wagon to have inspirational dreams, recording the tunes solo and some overdubs (guitar, slide guitar, guitar bass lines, some percussion) afterwards.
Then I swapped over to record some tunes for an other project with my band mate Ian Little for "Pelican Rex" in Christofs wagon and the time for Ukumentals no. 3 was over.
Christof did the mixing and mastering later on. Since we all are full time family dads and also working time is limited and I like to have my projects on point and rough, I like that, I like to compromise and not messing around too much with stuff in producrtion.

Later Charlotte Pelgen and Yuko Matsuyama each added a vocal track two of my tunes.

Enjoy the journey on solo ukulele mostly played on Brüko models this time.

I used
-a Brüko longneck maple soprano for track 2, 3, 6 (low g)
-a Brüko no. 4 low g, spruce/rosewood pineapple soprano low g and a S001 for the intriduction
-the pineapple for 4 and 9 and half of track 8
-the S001 for 8 (Iso Blues)
-a 1950s style 0 for track 5, 7 and 10 (reprise of 5)

Thank you everyone believing in me, my music, my passion for it and my passion about soprano ukuleles since 2020.
Credits go to Charlotte Pelgen (track 7) who motivated me through the years when we met at festivals. Credits also to Yuko Matsuyama who I met the first time at the Berlin Ukulelefestival 2023 (where I did the moderation with Angela Gobelin) and who blew me away with her incredible voice artistry with Remco (Ukulelezazs) and steel guitar artist Sebastian Müller.

You will hear some slide guitar also on track 2 which is dedicated to my younger son and who keeps me and my wife/partner busy in our parental roles. As well I added some percussion witth my drum stick brushes on my knees and two cymbals and some bass lines from an acoustic guitar or some resonator guitar.

Thanks everyone supporting me so far and may you enjoy the music.
Best, happy strumming, Jan Haasler

about

Jan Haasler Erfurt, Germany

My uke journey started in September 2020. The playing of Roy Smeck, Herb Ohta-San, Ukulelezaza and f.e. Corey Fujimoto (and many others) totally struck me all of a sudden i heard it last summer.
Many years I ignored the uke as a serious instrument being a guitar player since my childhood.
My journey is to get as much expression and distinctive creativity out of the soprano ukulele as possible.
